The South Coast, Iceland

My absolute favourite tour of our Iceland holiday was the Express Ice Cave Tour From Reykjavik with Goecco. It is a very long day (16 hours) in a minibus, but completely worth it if you cannot do an overnight tour in South Iceland.

The day started with a stop off at the magnificent Skogafoss waterfall. With its 60 metre drop and width of 25 metres, it envelops its visitors in clouds of spray.

Next was Reynisfjara black sand beach, which is probably the most famous beach in Iceland, with its volcanic sand, unique rock formations, roaring Atlantic waves and moody atmosphere.

The chunks of icebergs that lie stranded on the black sand beach at Jokulsarlon glitter in the sun like diamonds.  The beach is actually known as Diamond Beach.

The off roading journey over Vatnajokull Glacier, to get to the ice caves, was a bit like driving on the moon and was an absolute hoot!

Legend has it that an Aston Martin is at the bottom of the glacier, after James Bond movie makers got a little too enthusiastic with explosions for the film!

There is nothing like standing in an ice cave to make you feel completely in awe of nature. They are a truly mesmerising wonder!

The last stop of the tour was Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. It is floodlit at night, and at that time of the evening there were no other tourists!

Little did we know that we had one further, unscheduled, stop to make on the way back. Our wonderful driver was looking out for the northern lights on the way home, and they came out to dance for us. So for 15 mins, in a car park not far from Reykjavik, we enjoyed the perfect ending to what had already been a spectacular day.
