Arriving from Marco Polo airport, which is located just over 4 miles from Venice, you can reach the city by bus, taxi or water taxi. As we were staying at the Hotel Canal Grande, situated (as the name suggests) on the Grand Canal, we decided to take a private water taxi directly to the canal entrance of the hotel. A bit pricey, at around 120 Euros, but a once in a lifetime experience. It is cheaper not to book this through your hotel, as a surcharge will be added. Look for a sign for water taxis when exiting arrivals and book directly at the desk.
The lovely boutique Hotel Canal Grande is in an excellent location, set on the Grand Canal, just a few minutes from Santa Lucia train station and Piazzale Roma. It is a very small palace which has been elegantly restored, decked out in Rococo style furniture, typical of 18th century Venice. There’s also a small terrace overlooking the canal, to take in those beautiful views.
