Donovaly ~ Slovakia

Growing in popularity, Donovaly, a picturesque village in Slovakia’s central Banska region, is a beautiful winter wonderland at this time of year. It is perfect for those looking for a winter sports destination for a few days that doesn’t cost the earth, and ideal for a traveller like me, who hasn’t skied for years! Park Snow has ideal slopes for beginners, with the more adventurous Nova Hola for intermediate skiers, and plenty of hiking trails for those that enjoy trekking.

Ski passes, equipment hire and lessons were very reasonably priced (see here for details), as was the food in the resort bars and restaurants. In between hitting the slopes, enjoy a well deserved hot drink laced with something strong and warming. After a full day on the hill, you’ll be ready for a plate of hearty Slovakian food, invariably heavy on the garlic! I’d recommend a bowl of garlic soup, but only if all your party are willing to partake in the consumption of it as the fumes are particularly strong!
