A Day In Enchanting Dubrovnik ~ Croatia

One of the world’s most magnificent walled cities, overlooking the glistening blue Adriatic, Dubrovnik’s use as a location for Game of Thrones has put it on the map and increased visitors dramatically. In 1979, UNESCO included the old town of Dubrovnik, with its stunning Gothic and Baroque architecture, in the list of World Heritage Sites.

Things to see on a one day visit to Dubrovnik:

  1. The City Walls – a morning or early evening spent scaling the medieval Walls (which hark back to the 13th century), when the sun isn’t too high or too hot. They are best explored with a full-circuit, just over a mile’s walk along the battlements.
  2. Banje Beach – a 10-minute walk east of the Old Town affords magnificent views of the medieval walls across the water. You can hire sun beds and above the beach there’s a lounge-bar on a wooden deck, serving cocktails and snacks, plus a seafood restaurant in an upper-level dining room.
  3. Buza Bar – one of the most interesting bars in Dubrovnik due to its position on the cliffs right above the sea, with views across the Adriatic. It is also known as the “hole-in-the-wall” as in the old Dubrovnik dialect, buža means ‘hole’, and to get to this unique café bar, you have to go through the hole-in-the-wall.
  4. Cable car to Mount Srđ – unfortunately for us, the cable car was closed due to an ongoing dispute between the cable car company and the government over non payment of concession fees. When open, visitors have been able to take in the best vistas without having to trek up steep hills or trudge up hundreds of steps, and watching the sunset from the top of Mount Srđ is said to be particularly spectacular.
